A loyalty-program alternative for hotels: keeping guests without points

A loyalty program is the almost automatic answer to "how do we retain guests," but for an independent hotel or small group in the UAE it's often the wrong one: points work when a guest returns to the same property regularly, and most Dubai hotels live on one-off or infrequent visits from tourists and business travelers.

That's where the gap shows up: building a loyalty program costs money and integration time, and the real payoff mostly goes to large chains with dozens of properties where points can be redeemed anywhere in the brand. For a single hotel, points with nowhere to spend next time barely function as an incentive to return.

What actually retains a guest without points isn't abstract "brand loyalty" -- it's a specific memory that something good happened at this particular hotel: met interesting people, found a padel partner, had a better evening than expected. That's not something a discount can program in, but it's exactly what a hotel can make visible and easy to access.

A practical way to build that without points or a new budget is making sure guests actually find out about each other and about what's happening at the hotel in the evening. A live guest-activity feed, like U-GO's, does exactly that -- a guest sees what other guests are planning and joins, with no organizing effort from the hotel.

The side effect matters more than the direct one: a guest who had a good evening at a specific hotel because of people they met there is more likely to choose that same hotel again next time in Dubai -- not because they banked points, but because they remember how it felt.

This isn't a replacement for a loyalty program where one already works (a large chain, frequent guests) -- it's an alternative specifically for hotels where points were only ever effective in theory.
