Getting around Dubai without a car: metro, Careem, and what's actually walkable

Dubai has a reputation as a car-dependent city, and parts of that are true -- but for a solo traveler staying somewhere central, not having a car is rarely the obstacle it's made out to be.

The Dubai Metro is the backbone for most tourist routes: it connects the airport, Downtown, Dubai Marina, and most major attractions directly, runs every few minutes, and is genuinely the fastest way to cover long distances at times of day when road traffic is heavy. You'll need a Nol card -- a rechargeable smart card sold at every station -- to tap in and out; it also works on buses and trams.

For anything the metro doesn't reach directly, Careem and Uber cover the gap reliably and are the default way to move around after dark, rather than hailing a taxi on the street. Both are widely used, predictably priced, and don't require cash.

Trams and buses fill in the routes between metro stations and specific neighborhoods, and water taxis (abras) across Dubai Creek are both a practical option and one of the more scenic ways to cross the older part of the city.

What's actually walkable depends heavily on which part of Dubai you're staying in: Dubai Marina, Downtown, and JBR are genuinely pedestrian-friendly with connected promenades, while more spread-out areas were built around driving distances between buildings, not walking ones -- worth checking before assuming you can stroll everywhere.

The practical pattern most solo travelers land on: metro for the long, predictable legs of a day, ride-hailing for the last mile or after dark, and walking within whichever neighborhood-sized pocket the hotel sits in. None of it requires a car, an international license, or navigating Dubai traffic yourself.

One place this connects back to the rest of a solo stay: getting somewhere is a lot less of a puzzle when it's not just you working out the route -- a padel court, a rooftop bar, or a desert-safari pickup point is a much easier trip to figure out and split a Careem to when someone else at your hotel is already headed the same way.
